A North Carolina high school student has claimed that she was recently removed from the school bus on her way home due to what the assistant principal cited as a dress code violation.

According to ABC 11, the student's mother, India Middleton, arrived at Hoke County High School around two hours later after receiving a frantic call from Makhigha Davis who needed to be picked up. Upon arriving, Middleton found the 16-year-old outside alone in 50-degree weather. She claimed the school doors were locked, and there was no administration was on site.

"I don't send my children out here in provocative clothes to break any rules at school," said Middleton. "I feel like that could have been handled a different way.”

Middleton recorded and uploaded a video of herself trying to open the locked doors of the school and of her daughter sitting alone in a slightly off-the-shoulder shirt.

Makhigha wore the shirt throughout the school day with no comments made about it by teachers or administration. It was not until she was on her way home that she was stopped, according to ABC 11.

When ABC 11 reached out for a response, a statement from a spokesperson for the school read:

“Hoke County Schools will not make excuses for the poor judgement demonstrated by the assistant principal involved. The best course of action would have been to allow the student to get on the bus Friday afternoon and, if deemed necessary, handle any dress code issues on Monday morning. All Hoke County Schools’ administrators understand that if a child is pulled from a bus then they are responsible for that child’s supervision until they are safely picked up by the parent.”

However, Middleton does not believe a statement is enough.

"It seems like there is no consequence for the administrator," Middleton told ABC 11. "He gets to go about his regular day."
