Lauren Underwood, the 32-year-old from Naperville, Illinois, is now the youngest Black woman to serve in the U.S. Congress as a member of the House of Representatives reports NBC News. Underwood is a registered nurse and a two-time master's graduate of Johns Hopkins University.

Underwood was appointed by President Obama to serve as a Senior Advisor at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and helped implement the Affordable Healthcare Act (ACA).

Underwood joins a historic class of Congress members as a record number of women have been sworn in. The 116th Congress has a number of firsts — Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib are the first Muslim America congresswomen and Deb Haaland and Sharice Davids are the first Native American congresswomen.

"Proud of all we've accomplished—and thinking of the young women of the future who'll be stepping forward to serve in the coming years," Underwood wrote in a tweet. "A greater change is on the way."
