Thanksgiving family dinner arguments tend to get a little heated, and in the case of a father and son in Cary, North Carolina, it was nearly fatal.

After a disagreement over the NFL national anthem protests, things went extremely left.

Two of Jorge Luis Valencia Lamadrid's sons were having a debate centered around former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick's game-changing decision to kneel during the national anthem during a 2016 preseason game. The silent protest against racial injustice has sparked national discourse and inspired players of varying sports to join in solidarity.

WECT News 6 reports that Lamadrid was unable to separate his sons from fighting. He then got his shotgun after asking his 21-year-old son Esteban Marley Valencia to leave. He did before quickly returning and throwing patio furniture. After hitting his father in the face with a water bottle, the 51-year-old who was still holding his weapon squeezed the trigger of the pistol and shot his son.

Around 5 p.m. that day Valencia was shot in the hand and leg before police arrived on the scene. CBS News 17 reports that Lamadrid was arrested at their home on the 100 block of Fallsworth Drive and charged with aggravated assault using a deadly weapon.

The News and Observer shared that Wake County court records reveal his son was arrested for driving while impaired and drunk driving twice last year.

The young man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a nearby hospital.
