Diamond “Lavish” Reynolds, the girlfriend of Philando Castile, spoke at a protest outside the Minnesota governor’s mansion on Thursday afternoon. Reynolds recorded the events after Castile was shot by police on Facebook Live, and the video spread like wildfire on social media. She says that she and her 4-year-old daughter were riding with Castile when he was pulled over by police for a broken tail light.

According to her account of the events, the officer asked Castile for his ID, and once he reached for it, he told the officer he had a gun on him with a conceal-and-carry permit. After this, she said the officer shot him four or five times. Later, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. Reynolds was taken into custody and not released until 5 a.m.

“We don’t have to go through this. The police did this to us. He was showing his identification, he was licensed to carry and he was reaching for his ID in his back pocket. He told the officer as he was reaching for his license that he was licensed to carry,”

Reynolds reiterated that her boyfriend’s life was taken for no reason, and that she wants justice. “Police took four or five shots for no reason. They took his life for no reason. They did this to my daughter and they did it to me, and I want justice and I want peace. They took an innocent man away from us,” she said.

In the live Facebook video that Diamond posted, her daughter was in the background reassuring her as she was crying, saying, “It’s okay mommy, I’m right here.” Reynolds spoke about her courage at the protest. “My daughter has been stronger than me. Without this little angel by my side, I would have never been able to make it through this. She told me she would never leave my side, and she’s been there through all of this.”

Reynolds says he won’t rest until justice is served. “The police, the people that are supposed to serve and protect us are not serving us, and they are not protecting us. They are taking innocent people away from their families, innocent people off the streets and it’s not ok. I will not be able to sleep until I get justice.”
