Perhaps unsurprising considering that Black women are more likely to lose their jobs, women who are still employed aren’t resting easy about their security. The report showed that while everyone may be worried about job loss, concerns about reduced pay or finding a new job were highest among women of color. Black women are especially worried about getting laid off in comparison to white men (35% vs. 23%), about having their hours cut back (27% vs. 17%) and about trying to find a new job (31% vs. 13%).

While families across America are dealing with the financial and health consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, it’s crystal clear the hardships are not falling equally across the population. ⁠ ⁠ In the last three weeks, more than 16 million people filed for unemployment. Women—especially women of color, and Black women most of all— are feeling the greatest economic impact. ⁠ ⁠ Our latest survey finds that Black women are 2x as likely as white men to report that they’ve been laid off, furloughed, or had their hours cut or pay reduced because of the pandemic. ⁠ Women also have less of a financial cushion. They’re nearly 2x as likely as men to say that, if they lost income, within a month they wouldn’t be able to pay for necessities because they’d be out of money. The numbers are worse for Black women and other women of color. ⁠ And women are more likely than men to feel they’re in danger of not being able to pay for housing, groceries, or medical costs for themselves or their families in the next few months.
