President Donald Trump continues to praise controversial Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee despite his apparent ties to white supremacy.

In front of a crowd of 4,000 at a rally in Lebanon, Ohio, Trump sang Lee's praises while discussing Ohio-born former President Ulysses S. Grant, according to The Washington Post.

"So Robert E. Lee was a great general. And Abraham Lincoln developed a phobia. He couldn’t beat Robert E. Lee," Trump said Friday night.

The nonsensical Civil War history lesson came after Trump monologued about Kanye West's visit to the White House and a possible uptick of Black Americans voting for the Republican Party.

Without batting an eye, Trump claimed Lee was unbeatable until Lincoln recruited Grant. He enthusiastically lauded Lee's military record while putting down Grant for an alleged drinking problem, reports The Hill.

"He was going crazy. I don’t know if you know this story, but Robert E. Lee was winning battle after battle after battle. And Abraham Lincoln came home, he said, 'I can’t beat Robert E. Lee,'" Trump said.

"And he had all of his generals, they looked great, they were the top of their class at West Point. They were the greatest people. There’s only one problem — they didn’t know how the hell to win. They didn’t know how to fight. They didn’t know how."

This isn't the first instance Trump has celebrated Lee, a significant figure for white supremacists and Confederate sympathizers. Last year, following the Charlottesville Unite the Right rally, Trump went on record professing adulation about Lee's military career as a soldier and general in the Mexican-American War and other pre-Civil War conflicts.

“This week it's Robert E. Lee. I noticed that Stonewall Jackson is coming down," he said last year. "I wonder, is it George Washington next week, and is it Thomas Jefferson the week after? You know, you really do have to ask yourself, where does it stop?”

Lee's descendant Rev. Rob Lee IV has distanced himself from his ancestor's legacy of white supremacy. On Twitter, he urged others to dismiss Trump's rhetoric and disavow Lee entirely:
