This exclusive clip from Nia DaCosta’s Little Woods features Tessa Thompson’s character Ollie at the junction between her old life and a new beginning.

The clip features Thompson meeting with her probation officer Carter (Lance Reddick) as her period of probation is about to come to a close. Carter is trying to make sure Ollie stays on the right path. Even though she’s looking for legal jobs, it seems like her path is still shaky enough for Carter to impress upon her why she should stay on the straight and narrow.

The film also stars Lily James as Ollie’s sister Deb. Both are living in poverty-stricken Little Woods, North Dakota, trying to restructure their lives after their mother’s death. Unfortunately, they turn to illegal means to support themselves.

Shadow And Act‘s Aramide A. Tinubu wrote about the film’s intimate look at sisterhood amid the opioid epidemic in her Tribeca Film Festival review.

“Little Woods is a bold feminist tale of sisterhood, tenacity and the weariness of being female in a world always trying to harm you,” she said. “Little Woods certainly has the tropes of a classic Western. Yet, it feels a bit sluggish at times–matching the pace of the economically depressed town. However, the stellar chemistry between James and Thompson (who also executive produced the film) and a welcome and warm portrayal of Ollie’s police officer Carter…pushed the film forward when it began to lag.”

Little Woods will be in select theaters April 19.

DaCosta’s next project is tackling the Jordan Peele-produced sequel for Candyman, which will be in theaters June 12, 2020.
