Remember the Disney Channel movie, The Color of Friendship? It’s probably the most underrated one in their entire collection but that’s a conversation for another time.

Here we have a real life version with an adorable twist. 5-year-old Jax and Reddy are best buddies. They attend the same school and play well together–the boys are basically two peas in a pod. Last Friday, when it was time for Jax to get a haircut no one was prepared for his response. Jax’s mother, Lydia Rosebush, announced on her personal Facebook page that Jax told her he wanted his usual longer hair, cut short exactly like his friend Reddy. Not only did he want the same cut as his friend but he couldn’t wait to go to school the following Monday because his teacher wouldn’t be able to tell them apart due to the new matching hairstyles. Plot twist, Jax is white and Reddy is black.

"If this isn't proof that hate and prejudice is something that is taught I don't know what is. The only difference Jax sees in the two of them is their hair,” Lydia shared in her caption.

In a statement to WAVE 3 News, Lydia shared she just made the post because of how funny and cute her son was. She was never anticipating all this publicity. “It just struck me as funny that Jax doesn’t even notice that Reddy is a different color. When he describes Reddy he never mentions it. I thought with all the hate in the world today, we could use this lesson from an almost 5-year-old.”

Reddy and his older brother Enock were born in Africa but adopted by The Weldons, a white family in Louisville. Kevin Weldon, the pastor of Carlisle Avenue Baptist Church, is happy that his son is able to make such a strong bond with his friend despite their differences.

“My sons do not look like me…but we are a family all the same,” Kevin Weldon said. “There's an innocence children have that sometimes we lose. If we could get some of that back, I think it would be amazing.”
