In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, which is impacting New York City especially hard, Academy Award-winning director Spike Lee is honoring the city in a new short film.

Titled New York, New York, Lee’s short film serves as a tribute to the essential workers of New York City. Though Lee was born in Atlanta, Georgia, he is heavily associated with New York City. The city has been the centerpiece of many of his stories such as She’s Gotta Have It, Do The Right Thing and Crooklyn. On Instagram, Lee wrote, “My Short Film-NEW YORK NEW YORK Is A Love Letter To It’s [sic] People.”

Clocking in at three minutes and 30 seconds, the short film features many prominent New York City locations, such as the bridges, the subways and empty landmarks such as Times Square. Toward the end of the film, you can see appearances from essential workers such as doctors and nurses.
