A Maryland delegate is under fire after using a racial slur referring to a predominantly Black neighborhood.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Democrat Mary Ann Lisanti, who is a former Harford County Council member and Havre de Grace city manager, is attempting to tame the backlash after verbalizing her bigotry. In late January, the 51-year-old met with friends at Annapolis Cigar where she reportedly called a white colleague's campaign efforts in Prince George's County "knocking on doors in a n****r district."

“I deeply apologize to the citizens of my district, people of Maryland, all of my colleagues in the Maryland General Assembly and everyone reading this for my word choice several weeks ago,” Lisanti said Tuesday morning in front of the House Democratic Caucus.

As a result of her use of the slur, House Speaker Michael Busch removed her from two leadership positions, including her posts as House chairwoman of a joint committee and subcommittee on unemployment insurance.

“I am sickened that a word that is not in my vocabulary came out of my mouth. It does not represent my belief system, my life’s work or what is in my heart," she continued.

The New York Post reported Lisanti claimed she did not recall much from the evening before noting that she's sure "everyone has used it."

“I don’t recall that. I don’t recall much of that evening,“ she said before explaining if she'd ever used the term before. "I’m sure I have…I’m sure everyone has used it. I’ve used the f-word. I used the Lord’s name in vain.”

On Monday, she repeatedly apologized to group members at Maryland’s Legislative Black Caucus after being questioned about her language.

“There is no place in the House of Delegates for any racial slurs — or slurs of any kind in society in general,” said House Speaker Michael E. Busch.
