The New York Times published a report stating Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan had presented a plan in response to worries of international forces.

Shanahan's plan involves sending as many as 120,000 troops to the Middle East, should Iran either attack American forces or accelerate work toward nuclear weapons, according to The New York Times.

The report had many members of Congress concerned. Members drew comparisons and criticisms of the war in Iraq and Democratic lawmakers vowed to stop the plan from moving forward.

Despite democratic concerns, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said there would be no war with the United States, in comments to his senior officials.

"There won't be any war. The Iranian nation has chosen the path of resistance," Khamenei said.

Khamenei also reiterated Iran would not negotiate with America on a nuclear deal.

President Trump has also spoken out, denying the report and calling it “fake news.”

"Where was that story? In The New York Times?" Trump asked. "Well, The New York Times is fake news. Now, would I do that? We have not planned for that. Hopefully, we’re not going to have to plan for that. And if we did that, we’d send a hell of a lot more troops than that."
