While protesting the inhumane living conditions at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn on Sunday, Love & Hip Hop: New York star Yandy Smith was pepper-sprayed.

As Blavity previously reported, due to a partial power outage, incarcerated individuals were left without power or heat in freezing conditions for days. When the sun went down, the prison reportedly went pitch black. Over the weekend, protests ensued with people frustrated by the deplorable conditions and incarcerated persons showed their own frustrations and support of the demonstrations by banging against the windows of the prison.

Smith joined the protests, demanding to enter the facility. She actively posted updates about what was going on at the center, even calling out officials for not sending blankets. Smith was subsequently pepper-sprayed by guards after a group of demonstrators, including Smith, began darting toward the building according to TMZ.

In her Instagram story, she later reported that her eyes were on fire, and she was having trouble, but she was alive.

“I’m okay. I’m alive. But we got work to do. We got serious work to do,” she said according to Yahoo.

On Sunday night, her work, along with the collective help of other organizers and protesters, turned fruitful. The power was turned on,and individuals finally had light and heat. The Justice Department also claimed it would work to ensure this never happened again.

“In the coming days, the [Justice] Department will work with the Bureau of Prisons to examine what happened and ensure the facility has the power, heat and backup systems in place to prevent the problem from reoccurring,” said Deputy Director of Public Affairs for the Justice Department Wyn Hornbuckle.
