A woman in Memphis, Tennessee, was surprised to see that police didn't side with her after she called them on a real estate investor inspecting a nearby property.

Michael Hayes was inspecting a home being prepped for repairs on May 5 when a white woman next door began harassing him. She assumed he was a thief.

“So we’re out here at a house now, one of where we’re under contract to pick up on, and for whatever reason, the neighbor has called the police on us,” Hayes said in the nine-minute video before asking the woman if officers said when they’d be coming.

The woman came out of her home to demand to see paperwork validating his right to be in the home. Instead of adding fuel to the fire, he obliged and showed her his investment contract and a statement from the owner granting him permission.

“I mean, this is what we go through — [a] young black man out here trying to do what’s right and we get the police called on us.”

When Memphis police arrived, Hayes showed them his paperwork and was taken aback when the officers took his side.

“You keep the camera rolling,” the white male officer told Hayes. “If you have any problems with her, what I want you to do is call me back over here, and she will go to jail today. I don’t fool around.”

Ignoring the officers' commands, the woman insisted that she knew people in the sheriff's office and that Hayes was not allowed to be at the home. The male officer threatened to take the woman to jail if she continued.

“I don’t care if you’re friends with the president,” the male cop replied. “You’re going to let him do what he’s going to do. Listen to me — if you try to do anything to stop him, I’m going to take you to jail.”
