Popular bakery chain Sprinkles announced that it’s closing for good. Sprinkles founder Candace Nelson, who sold the business in 2012, said via Instagram that the company is closing all of its locations.

“Just to say that out loud is completely surreal,” Nelson said in the video clip. “Even though I sold the company over a decade ago, I still have such a personal connection to it, and this isn’t how I thought the story would go.”

The Sprinkles stores that are closing include two brick-and-mortar locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, as well as five other stores within the region. The stores will officially close on Dec. 31, WFAA reported.

Candace Nelson opened up the first Sprinkles store in 2005 in Beverly Hills

Two years after Candace Nelson opened the first Sprinkles store, she opened up two more stores in California. The business then expanded to Dallas, Arizona, Washington D.C., Florida, Nevada and Utah. As the company now closes its doors, Nelson said she is grateful for all the communities that supported her business over the years.

“I’m deeply grateful to the fans, customers and community who showed up, celebrated with us and made Sprinkles part of their traditions — and to the team who made it all happen,” Nelson said in her Instagram video. “I’ll always be proud of what we built.”

Cupcake ATMs were super popular around Los Angeles in the 2010s

Nelson took the business to another level when she introduced the cupcake ATM in 2012, according to The New York Post. Customers formed long lines in front of the popular cupcake ATMs, waiting for the machine to dispense their favorite treats.

At the height of its popularity, Sprinkles was featured on Today and earned endorsements from some of the biggest celebrities — including Oprah Winfrey, Barbra Streisand, Katie Holmes, Tyra Banks, Jimmy Kimmel, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jessica Alba and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
