Brian Kemp, Georgia’s Secretary of State who is running against Stacey Abrams for governor, has been criticized for his role as an overseer of elections in the very state he’s running in. With his title, Kemp has put 53,000 voter registration applications on hold, the majority of which belong to black citizens, USA Today reports. Fearing bias, residents have filed a lawsuit against him, asking a judge to rule that Kemp be removed from the counting of votes and certification of results, NBC News reports.

Across the state, reports illustrate complaints of long lines, exasperated wait times, a series of technical issues, limited amounts of voting machines at polling stations and other issues.

In an ironic twist of fate, these “mishaps” have even prevented Kemp himself from being able to seamlessly cash his ballot. In a video released by WSB-TV, Kemp can be seen struggling with the voting process. When Abrams’ Republican challenger tried to vote, his card read as “invalid.”

Kemp’s team told NBC News that the gubernatorial candidate’s card was blank and he had to get another one.
