Steven Silver, who stars in 13 Reasons Why, has booked the lead in an indie project that is firming up.

Everybody Hates Chris creator Ali LeRoi is directing the drama film The Obituary of Tunde Johnson. USC student Stanley Kalu wrote the script, which follows “a wealthy, Black, high school senior who falls victim to an endless time loop of police brutality.” His script won a $1 million screenplay competition through The Launch.

Here’s the official description per Deadline, who first reported the story: Set in Southern California, the film centers on Tunde Johnson (Silver), a queer, Black prep school senior who finds himself in an endless loop of police brutality. Soren O’Connor (Spencer Neville) is Johnson’s all-American athlete boyfriend who hides his sexuality from both his conservative father and society by maintaining a relationship with Tunde’s best friend Marley Meyers (Nicola Peltz).

Jason Shuman and Zachary Green, the creators of The Launch who selected Kalu’s script as the first winner, are producing, as well as philanthropists Chuck and Marni Bond.

Production on the film begins this week in Los Angeles.

Silver will also appear in the upcoming films All the Little Things We Kill and Beef.
