Lately, I’ve been experimenting with wigs. With the help of my roommate, I made my first wig this year and it was only a minor fail. I didn’t take into consideration how much heat damage the small portion of my hair left out would be subjected to in the U-part style I decided on. The constant blow-drying just to blend my hair with the synthetic hair was time-consuming and damaging. Some days I went without blow-drying it and the difference in the two textures was way too noticeable. I wasn’t here for it. As you can imagine, there were plenty of headwraps, headbands and beanies worn to hide my lack of effort.

I used a 7-piece kit from the beauty supply store that was on sale for less than $20. The texture was exactly like my hair. But I had to blow-dry and flat-iron it into submission and use a hot comb to lay it all flat, then slick down my perimeter with the most laid-for-the-gods-worthy of edge controls. It did its job of protecting my natural hair, for the most part, but I also wanted it to be stylish and believable. Don’t get me wrong, I got quite a few compliments on the wig, and even more when I said that I made it. I was just looking for something a little different.

My first wig experience will not be my last. I’ve learned from my mistakes and will apply them to my next wig because I’m also not here for the constant struggle of doing this 4c hair every few days. No ma’am. I’ve been doing my research — watching a bunch of YouTube videos — and I found a few tutorials for wig beginners that I thought I’d share. The methods these ladies use will definitely be applied to my next wig.
