Organizers have canceled the Women's March is Eureka, California due to a lack of diversity among participants.

Buzzfeed News reports the march, which was scheduled to take place in Humboldt County later this month, was officially canceled Friday. Organizers wrote on Facebook they made the decision because they didn't want the march to be "overwhelmingly white."

"Instead of pushing forward with crucial voices absent, the organizing team will take time for more outreach," the organizers wrote.

Instead of holding the march, the organizers hope to put together an event for International Women's Day that is more inclusive. The organizers also encouraged those planning to attend the march to support Martin Luther King Day events.

“Our goal is that planning will continue and we will be successful in creating an event that will build power and community engagement through connection between women that seek to improve the lives of all in our community,” the Facebook announcement reads.

Humboldt County is mostly white. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the area is about 50 percent female and is 74 percent white, 11 percent Latinx, six percent Native American and about 1.5 percent Black.

NBC News reports the organizers of the California march, who go by the name Eureka Group, are not official members of the Women’s March Organization; however, the larger, national Women's March group faces many of the same questions over diversity and inclusion.

As Blavity reported late last year, one of the Women's March founders openly criticized the organization's co-chairs for their links to Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, who has been decried for his anti-Semitic and homophobic messages.
