You may recall our interview with The Black List founder Franklin Leonard a few weeks ago, where he spoke about two upcoming “very big announcements” that promised more access for new writers. It seems the first was news of the Black List’s partnership with WGA West, which will offer a member discount and other benefits. Now the Black List has announced its second big initiative, the Black List Screenwriters Lab. 

The program will invite six new writers (who can’t have earned more than $25,000 for screenwriting) to an all-expense paid intensive workshop in Las Vegas in the fall where they’ll receive one-on-one mentorship from industry professionals. 

Details are still surfacing about the program including the names of all the mentors involved. But so far it sounds similar to programs offered by Sundance, Film Independent, and some of the major studios, where the main benefit is mentorship and professional access. The difference is a paid commitment, as Lab participants will be chosen through the Black List’s script evaluation service. Though if you’ve already signed up for the service, or are considering it, this may give you extra incentive. 

To be considered for the Lab, writers must have purchased Black List script evaluations by July 31. On August 30, 15 writers will be selected to provide a personal statement which will be used to narrow down the final six Lab participants.
