The first trailer for The Silent Twins, starrring Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrance, has been released.
The film is written by Andrea Seigel and based on the real-life book on the Gibbons twins, The Silent Twins, by Marjorie Wallace. It will be the English language debut of Polish director Agnieszka Smoczynska
Here's the logline:
THE SILENT TWINS is the astounding true story of twin sisters who only communicated with one another. As a result, they created a rich, fascinating world to escape the reality of their own lives.
The film was prevously described as “the haunting story of June and Jennifer Gibbons, twins from the only Black family in a small town in Wales in the 1970s and 80s. Feeling isolated from that unwelcoming community, the pair turn inward and reject communication with everyone but each other, retreating into their own fantasy world of artistic inspiration and adolescent desires. After a spree of vandalism inspired by an American boy they both idolize, the girls, now teenagers, are summarily sentenced to Broadmoor, an infamous psychiatric hospital, where they face the choice to separate and survive or die together.”
Wright produces the film along with Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska, Joshua Horsfield, Ben Pugh, Ewa Puszczyńska, Anita Gou and Alicia Van Couvering.
Our Cannes review of the film reads, “The Gibbons twins’ story is an important one to tell. Smoczynska gets a lot of it right, infusing the sisters’ actual passages, songs, and writings into the script. However, the nuances of their Black experience are barely highlighted, making them yet again misunderstood.”
