Prom season is upon us, and the teens are bringing the creativity once again! One particular teen, Skyler Branch, really hit it out the park with some black girl magic literally printed into her dress.
According to Yahoo!, Skyler initially decided to use her dress to honor her lineage following the passing of her paternal grandmother. Along with her late grandmother's face, the 17-year-old White Station High School (Memphis, Tennessee) student included her great-grandmothers, other grandmother and aunts' faces as well.
“I called Shannon up and told her what concepts Skyler wanted, and what we wanted the dress to look like,” said Skyler's mother, Dayna Branch. “We sat down with her, we went over the print and where we wanted everyone to be. She has her great-great grandmothers on there, she has her great grandmothers on there, as well as her grandmothers. She has all of her aunts from Memphis to Houston. Everybody’s on there.”
Skyler took that inspiration and went further by filling up the dress with other black women that inspire her. The dress has a myriad of black excellence faces such as Michelle Obama, Halle Berry, Maya Angelou, Oprah, Taraji P. Henson and more, including one particular historical black woman in history who inspired her career aspirations.
“Skyler is actually going to school for pre-vet studies,” Dayna noted. “One of the women on the dress is Dr. Alfreda J. Webb, the first African American female veterinarian in the U.S.”
“She said, ‘Mom, there’s been so many extraordinary African American women who have done so much for me. I want to show them some respect so that they know that not just the older adults, but the younger adults appreciate who paved the way,’” Dana said.
