He grips his young daughter’s hand and promises he’s proud of her as a man wearing a bandana and low-slung pants holds a gun to the back of his head.
The short, one-minute rap video has now gone viral for its gripping tale of violence and guilt with 3.1 million views.
The poster, Instagram user @gunjin_, referenced the murder of rapper XXXTentacion and Lesandro “Junior” Feliz-Guzman, who was stabbed and killed with a machete in the Bronx.
“First X died then this 15yr old young baw!!! When will it stop?”
After gifting her father with a quick kiss, the vocalist holding the gun begins a soft belt of XXXTentacion’s song “Changes.”
“Baby I don’t understand this/ You’re changing/ I can’t stand this/ My heart can’t take this damage/ And the way I feel, can’t stand it” the vocalist sings in the video.
Soon after, the young girl’s father joins in, admitting:
“I got a promise I made/ that daddy would always be there./ But daddy been running the streets/ I want you to know that I care” he raps. “Daddy been running in beef/ you know that your father is fair. But daddy gonna tell you the truth, so his daughter will never be scared.”
The vocalist chimes back in on beat before @gunjin_ continues:
“Don’t go looking for no one like me/ a good man go to school and he work./ Don’t be looking for thugs that’s up in the clubs/ selling drugs to be popular flirts./ Represent me right./ you and your sisters is tight./ If one of ya’ll get into some trouble/ remember you all gotta fight.”
The video ends soon after, but not before, softly, @gunjin raps:
“I’m proud of you,” he says while looking into his daughter’s eyes. “Young woman I never had met/ You was only 4-years-old when I died/ and got shot on the steps.”
The video has garnered massive attention, including that of celebrities who admire the message such as Diddy and Snoop Dogg.
Diddy tweeted about stopping the killing and loving each other instead:
Such a powerful and profound way to address the tragedy of us killing each other. Killing your brother! Let’s stop the killing please. Let’s love each other.
