Update (June 26, 2020): Tiffany Haddish
shared more details surrounding her past experiences with police during an interview on the Hustling With Vivica A. Fox podcast on Wednesday.
In 2018, the comedienne told Glamour Magazine that a police cadet raped her when she was 17. While speaking with Fox, Haddish talked about how the experience haunted her for years and still affects how she interacts with police officers.
She told Fox that the situation took a “little bit of [her] soul" and that she never got the kind of support that she needed.
"I dated a police officer, a judge, a lawyer. I dated several different kinds of dudes, thinking, ‘Oh if I date them, they'll love me and they'll try to help me with my crusade of getting justice for my family and myself.' But they was like, ‘Nah,'" she said.
Haddish added that the lack of support continues to haunt her and affect her relationships.
"I had to learn revenge is not really where it's at. Really the true revenge is in your success," she shared. "I don't know why I thought these police would do something to this other police officer because he took advantage of me — like I wasn't even taken advantage of, that motherf**ker just took me," Haddish told Fox.
She went on to speak about other encounters with police, describing in detail one instance where she was given a ticket for smoking weed in her car.
Before she was given a ticket, Haddish said the officers pulled their guns on her and that she tried to use jokes to diffuse the tense situation.
"I didn't make no fuss about it or anything. I just was letting them know I was scared, that I'm not doing anything wrong. The more that I talked to them, I was trying to crack jokes to try and lighten the mood even though I was super afraid for my life," she said.
Original (August 01, 2018): Tiffany Haddish opened up about being raped when she was a teenager in a recent interview with Glamour Magazine.
The publication’s September cover girl revealed she was raped by a police cadet when she was 17 years old.
“That whole experience put me in such a messed-up place for a long time, and I ended up going to counseling,” Haddish said.
The 38-year-old said she reported the incident but didn’t allude to whether he faced any legal repercussions. USA Today notes this isn’t the first time Haddish has talked about the event.
The Night School star told the story during her guest spot on The Champs podcast last year.
Haddish said she met him at a basketball game, and he later offered her a ride home after a school dance. Instead, he drove her to his place.
“So we get there, and we get to his place, and I see, like, handcuffs and a police uniform and I'm like, 'What's that? Is that like a Halloween costume or something?” Haddish said. “And he's like, 'No, I'm a cadet; I'm training to be in the police force. I want to end up being a police officer.' … Next thing I know, I've got one arm up in the handcuff, and he's got me pinned down."
Haddish said she fought back, but he was able to overpower her.
“He raped me. He was stronger than me,” she said through tears. “It was the worst feeling in the world.”
Haddish told Glamour the incident made her act aggressively as a defense mechanism.
“I notice that men are afraid of women that are aggressive. So to protect myself I become semi-aggressive,” she added. “You hear about, ‘Tiffany always hitting on somebody,’ but that’s to keep them from hitting on me.”
