TikTok announced a new set of community guidelines to help make the app a safer place in a recent news release.

Cormac Keenan—TikTok's Head of Trust and Safety—revealed it would begin cracking down on content that promotes conversion therapy, misogyny, misgendering and deadnaming (the practice of referring to a transgender person by their birth name instead of the name they've adopted during their transition).

"Though these ideologies have long been prohibited on TikTok, we've heard from creators and civil society organizations that it's important to be explicit in our Community Guidelines. On top of this, we hope our recent feature enabling people to add their pronouns will encourage respectful and inclusive dialogue on our platform," Keenan wrote.

TikTok will also begin taking on a more nuanced approach to identifying content that promotes eating disorders, as many potentially triggering uploads can easily slip through the cracks.

"While we already remove content that promotes eating disorders, we'll start to also remove the promotion of disordered eating," reads the announcement. "Our aim is to acknowledge more symptoms, such as overexercise or short-term fasting, that are frequently under-recognized signs of a potential problem."

In addition to these updates, the app is also committing to combating "dangerous acts and challenges," including "suicide hoaxes." The platform is growing increasingly aware of how potentially harmful trends—such as the infamous "blackout challenge"—can rise to popularity on the app, and TikTok resultingly wants to go into more detail about what kind of behaviors are not allowed.

To support this effort, TikTok is also promoting a new campaign among users dubbed "Stop, Think, Decide, and Act" to help people familiarize themselves with the practice of identifying dangerous online challenges.

It's also worth mentioning that the app is working on improving its recommendation system algorithm to filter out "content that may not be appropriate for a general audience," which would help crackdown on minors being exposed to adult-focused content.

These updates will be implemented "over the next few weeks" and hopefully make the app a safer, more positive community.
