It’s that time of the year again where "What You Want for Christmas" and "Sleigh Ride" are in heavy rotation on the radio while BET is playing Holiday Heart and A Madea Christmas at least twice a day. Regardless of how corny it might seem, we all have holiday guilty pleasures that we look forward to. One of mine includes watching the Christmas episodes of cartoons, but we often don’t get to see the media show the other holiday celebrations, such as Kwanzaa. Here are my top 5 moments in television that represented Kwanzaa well.

1. The Proud Family — "Seven Days of Kwanzaa"

Shout out to Disney for letting The Proud Family not only show that the holidays aren’t only about the gifts but about spending time with family and showing a family that celebrates Kwanzaa, too. Representation matters.  

2. Rugrats — "A Rugrats Kwanzaa"

Susie Carmichael was and will forever be one of the dopest kids on the Rugrats . The show was known to celebrate a diversity of holidays, including their Hanukkah episode. But for this episode, they brought in Susie’s Aunt to teach Susie, her family, Tommy, Kimmy, Phil, Lil and Chuckie about celebrating black history.  

3. Futurama — "A Tale of Two Santas"

Futurama introduced everyone to Santa Claus Robot, Hanukkah Zombie and the hilarious Kwanzaa-bot voiced by Coolio. Every year for the past 647 years, Kwanzaa-bot gives children a book called What the Hell is Kwanzaa? and constantly questions why no one knows what Kwanzaa is yet. Kwanza- bot even has a song about it. 4. Sesame Street — "Kwanzaa in Elmo’s World"

Sesame Street has always celebrated diversity and embraced cultures outside of the U.S., so it comes as no surprise that they would make this list. Sesame Street had Elmo join in on the Kwanzaa fun with dancing.

5.  Everybody Hates Chris — "Everybody Hates Kwanzaa"

Chris’ teacher assigns the class a homework assignment over break and in Chris’ words, “I’m on vacation. Call Oprah!” Although Chris finds a way to get his homework done, his father finds out about Kwanzaa and decides it's cheaper for the family to celebrate it than Christmas.
