A Memphis, Tennessee, high school student has been reportedly harassed and bullied by peers for being trans

Melrose High School student Keloni Grand told Fox 13 Memphis she was bullied for her gender identity on January 28.

According to a January 31 report, Keloni was hanging out with friends after school when two unidentified boys walked up to her. She tried to evade them, but they continued to follow and harass her until getting a reaction.

“They were saying the usual names,” the student told the outlet. “‘You f****t, you gay, you t****y. We ready to fight you. We ready to beat you, we are going to shoot you, we going to kill you.’”

The name-calling and slurs persisted. Two more boys joined the others, escalating the already tense situation.

One of the boys in the group allegedly spat on her during the altercation. Keloni believes the initial pair intentionally harassed her to start a fight.

“I was like, ‘Why you always messing with me? Can’t you leave me alone?’” she said.

It's unclear whether Keloni has been the target of the same bullies before the most recent encounter. But since the beginning of her transition, which began in January of this year, she says she has been subject to harassment of this nature more than once.

Two previous incidents were reported to school administrators, but no action was taken to ensure her safety, Keloni said.

By the time her grandmother and aunt arrived at school to pick her up, the crowd had grown larger. “There were 15, 16 guys out there," her aunt told Fox 13.

Keloni's grandmother and aunt reported the recent incident to the school, but it is not clear if the administration addressed the bullying. WHIO reports they are considering transferring her to another school due to Melrose High's inability to protect her.

The constant ridicule and threats of violence have made Keloni regret living in her truth. "Sometimes, I think I should hide myself, but people tell me to keep pushing and be myself,” Keloni told Fox 13.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the school told media it is investigating the bullying incident but did not provide further comment.

A report from the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) shows Black transgendered people often face greater threats of discrimination in almost every metric. They suffer from economic disparities and shorter lifespans.

Black trans women reportedly live an average of 35 years.

"It’s unbelievable. It’s shocking that I have to be removed from a situation because people don’t like who I am,” she said.
