Travis Scott is heading an effort to fix concert safety protocols. The rapper has been spending time meeting with lawmakers and music executives to ensure a situation like the recent tragedy at his Astroworld Festival isn't repeated at future shows, TMZ reports.
Scott met with The United States Conference of Mayors (USCM), a group that oversees the interests of more than 1,400 cities across the country, to come to an agreement on building a committee of power players in government, public safety, emergency response, health care event management, music and technology. The group will be tasked to create safety protocols that future shows will follow to make sure audience members are protected.
According to an outline of the committee's goals, the mission is to "aggressively focus on new technologies and innovations that offer ways to address these challenges." Scott will be working alongside Reno, Nevada, Mayor Hillary Schieve, who also serves as the chair of the conference's Tourism, Art, Parks, Entertainment and Sports Committee.
Ten people tragically lost their lives in a massive trampling incident that left hundreds injured at Scott's Astroworld Festival in Houston this year, as Blavity previously reported.
Scott recently opened up about the tragedy in an hour-long interview with Charlamagne Tha God, where he revealed he felt a sense of personal duty to his fans to come up with a solution to prevent incidents like the one at this concert.
“As an artist, you just do the creative. And this, to be my festival, I got to bring artists, creatively produce it. We just trust the professionals to make sure that people are taken care of and leaving safely,” Scott said during the interview. “I just can control what I can on the stage and, you know, have the professionals control what they can in the crowd. As an artist, it’s hard because you want to have the best shows and you want to have the best experiences, you link with professionals to handle that side of it."
"You want to know what’s going on and I think that’s what we got to figure out, figure out what happened, how’d it happen,” he added. “Fans come to have a good experience. I have a responsibility to figure out what happened here. I have a responsibility to figure out a solution. Hopefully, this takes a first step into us as artists having more insight of what’s going on.”
