Following news of the financial aid scandal at Howard University, many question – and protest – the university's misappropriation of financial aid funds. Tyrone Hankerson Jr., a former student worker in the financial aid office, has been at the center of the scandal after a Medium post alleged he embezzled money from the university. He says he's been bullied and harassed since the allegations went viral.

In an interview with CBS earlier this week, Hankerson Jr. denied the allegations made in the anonymous now-removed Medium post.

"… I have never embezzled any money nor have I embezzled any money from Howard University particularly," he said. He later confirmed that he received funding from the university for his "education," he claimed, but he insisted the allegations in the blog post were "absolutely false."

Hankerson Jr., now a law student at Howard, explained that he was a work study participant in the financial aid office and was not one of the employees terminated from the university. Last week, Howard University's President Wayne A.I. Frederick confirmed that six employees were fired after an investigation found "misappropriation of university-provided financial aid funds."

In the interview, Hankerson Jr. also said that he never personally awarded himself any financial aid money to his own account. His lawyer, James Walker, told CBS that they believe Howard University should have publicly apologized to Hankerson Jr. amid the allegations.

"We've reached out to the university, and we've given them a set limited time to answer our demand that they fully exonerate Mr. Hankerson, fully restore his credibility and reputation throughout the nation…" he said in part.

Hankerson Jr. has been called out and meme'd for his seemingly lavish lifestyle and stylish designer clothing depicted on social media.

The former Howard University undergraduate student told CBS that the allegations have turned his life "upside down."

He added that he is concerned for his safety.
