Following universally negative reviews and a tepid box office return, it appears as though Universal has dropped its awards campaign for the musical film, Cats.
The film, released on December 20 in the United States, crashed and tanked with a box office opening of $6.5 million.
Starring Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Jennifer Hudson, Rebel Wilson, Idris Elba, James Corden, Jason Derulo and Taylor Swift, Cats reportedly had a budget of $100 million.
While Cats was initially featured on Universal’s “for your consideration” page next to more acclaimed films such Jordan Peele’s horror film Us and Melina Matsoukas’ directorial debut Queen & Slim, BuzzFeed reports that the link that would have shown screenings for the musical film and the Oscar categories it was aiming for has been taken down.
Despite its critical and commercial reviews, the film still earned a Golden Globe nomination in the Best Original Song category for “Beautiful Ghosts,” which was written by Taylor Swift and musical composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.
