Atlanta rapper J.Nolan just released a musically ambitious piece with his new EP, Above The Fray. Obviously influenced by the sounds of yesteryear, Nolan put together a 9-track collection that seamlessly merges the sounds of traditional boom-bap on songs like "Around The Way RMX" with neo-soul on "Destiny," down to a more current blend of samples and trap-ish drums on "Nova Freeverse."
The lyrical content of the project is primarily centered on life experiences, speaking on some of the racial and economic divide that runs rampant in his community, and an underlying theme of staying grounded spiritually in order to press forward with a positive mindset. Above The Fray rounds out at about 35 minutes in running time and serves as a nice complement to the table that Common and A Tribe Called Quest have set with their newly released albums.
