A private university in Salt Lake City, Utah, has found itself at the center of controversy thanks to an eyebrow-raising course being offered
Westminster College specifically unveiled an upcoming film class devoted to the critical study of pornography, leaving many with mixed feelings.
“Hard core pornography is an American as apple pie and more popular than Sunday night football,” the course description reads. “We will watch pornographic films together and discuss the sexualization of race, class, and gender and as an experimental, radical art form.”
I thought this was a joke—it isn’t. This is a pornography class that you can enroll in at Westminster College in Salt Lake City. The class description reads that porn is as American as apple pie and students will watch pornographic films together and discuss sex as an art form. pic.twitter.com/ZxcWP8J2jB

As you can imagine, word of the course swiftly began spreading online, with some critiquing the idea.
There is a college in Utah that is offering a class where students will watch PORN together.
Porn, apparently, is a serious art form worthy of deep contemplation in a group setting.
What could possibly go wrong?

The school should lose state and federal funding so long as it hosts it tbh.
Accreditation should also be up for debate imo. pic.twitter.com/MImhF7C8YF

However, many users defended the scholarly study of pornography.
Adults studying this, a genre and medium hundreds of millions of people are exposed to all the time, critically is fine actually. https://t.co/uzYxAszrHy

everyone being so annoying about the porn college class. There are actual critiques to be had about delivery of the material but in general. Why shouldn’t ADULTS take a class on it lol.

I took a porn class in college. It was really interesting and I got to hear a lot of different perspectives on porn I probably wouldn’t have otherwise. Porn consumption has a huge influence on culture and our irl sexual behaviors, why shouldn’t we be studying that? https://t.co/hoaHlztZcJ

Westminster College released a statement and defended the course offering in response to the attention.
“Westminster College occasionally offers elective courses like this as an opportunity to analyze social issues,” the college said. “As part of this analysis, Westminster College, along with other institutions of higher learning across the county and the world, often explore challenging subject matter to further understand their pervasiveness and impact.”
“Descriptions of these courses, while alarming to some readers, help students decide if they wish to engage in serious investigation of controversial subjects,” the university added.
It’s also worth noting that, in addition to the porn class, Westminster College also offers another film course dubbed “Sex on Film.”
“This course aims to study the evolution of sex in mainstream films through a selection of U.S. films from the late 1920s to our present time. We begin with the pre-code Hollywood era,” the course description reads. “Note that most of these films have been banned (at one time or another) and, in some cases, the filmmakers and actresses/actors arrested due to obscenity laws in the U.S. and abroad.”
What do you think about the situation?
