The Spanish film Los Pasos Dobles (The Double Steps), directed by Isaki Lacuesta from a script by Lacuesta and Isa Campo, was the winner of the Best Film Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain this past Saturday. The film is inspired by the biography of French artist and author Francois Augieras (1925-1971) “who painted the walls of a military bunker in the desert and let it sink into the sand.”

The film, starring Miguel Barcelo and Djenebou Keita, mixes documentary and fiction, telling the story of Spanish artist Miquel Barcelo’s search for paintings supposedly hidden in Mali. Here’s the translated full synopsis:

The best way to run from your enemies without leaving a trace is to walk backwards over your own footsteps. That’s what Francois Auguieras, a man who painted the walls of a military bunker in the desert and let it sink into the sand, thought. However, who is Auguieras? Legionary? Painter? Writer? Gunman? Saint? Thief? Devil? Or a combination of all?
