I know this doesn’t really apply to our site, but I saw the story on Indiewire‘s home page and I found the trailer interesting and compelling enough to post here. Miss Bala was well received by critics when it premiered at Cannes earlier this year. The film, starring newcomer Stephanie Sigman in a breakthrough performance, will screen at Telluride Film Festival, Toronto Film Festival and the New York Film Festival this year.
Written and directed by Gerardo Naranjo, the film centers around an aspiring beauty queen and her abduction by Mexico’s organized crime, who coerces her into working for them. The film will be released by 20th Century Fox in New York on October 14. The subject matter is reminiscent of 2004 Colombian drama thriller Maria Full of Grace, about an ordinary Colombian young woman who gets involved in cocaine traffc to the U.S. Actress Catalina Sandido Moreno‘s performance in that film garnered an Oscar nomination.
