In what will be her next released project after this fall's education reform drama Won't Back Down, Viola Davis co-stars in the upcoming adaptation of Beautiful Creatures, the first of three novels by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl about Ethan, a mortal boy living in the South, and Lena, the girl he loves with enigmatic powers she’s trying to keep hidden.
A supernatural love story set in the South, "Beautiful Creatures" tells the tale of two star-crossed lovers: Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich), a young man longing to escape his small town, and Lena (Alice Englert), a mysterious new girl. Together, they uncover dark secrets about their respective families, their history and their town.
Viola Davis plays Amarie "Amma" Treadeau, described as, a seer who is like a grandmother to Ethan. She can communicate with her dead family who she calls The Greats.
Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros are both behind the film, with Richard LaGravenese as director.
Also starring are Emma Thompson in dual roles as Sarafine and Mrs Lincoln, and Jeremy Irons as Lena's uncle Macon Ravenwood.
Newcomers Alden Ehrenreich and Alice Englert star as Ethan and Lena.
The film is expected in February 2013.
