A 1-year-old black girl died in Nashville, Tennessee, after being left in a hot pickup truck for hours on Wednesday, May 23, The Tennessean reported. Police identified the baby girl as Katera Barker who was recently adopted by Matt and Jenny Barker. 

According to reports by the Metro Nashville Police Department, Matt Barker said he reportedly forgot his 1-year-old daughter in his truck prior to going on a business trip. On Wednesday at around 7:30 a.m., Matt Barker reportedly drove Katera and their other 5-year-old child to a daycare center. He dropped the other child at the daycare center but reportedly forgot Katera in her car seat in the back of his truck. He then returned home at approximately 8 a.m., parked his vehicle in his driveway and called a ride-sharing service to go to the airport. 

The Tennessean reported that later on Wednesday evening Jenny Barker went to the daycare center to pick up her children when she was told Katera was never dropped off.

According to police, Jenny Barker then called her husband and realized Katera was left in the pickup truck. The mom then drove home and reportedly called the police, which was after 5 p.m., and removed Katera from the truck when she arrived at her driveway. She then gave the baby CPR until paramedics arrived. Katera was transferred to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival, The Tennessean reported.

Matt Barker reportedly flew back to Nashville and arrived later that night. According to NewsChannel5, police said Matt and Jenny Barker have been fully cooperative with the investigation. Temperatures in Nashville on that Wednesday were reported to have a high of 89 degrees, NewsChannel5 reported. 

NewsChannel5 reported that Nashville officials have said charges were unlikely to be filed, but the investigation is ongoing.

According to The Washington Post, Katera's birth mother, who was not publicly identified, was reportedly informed about the tragic incident.
