A white Texas Democrat has apologized after calling Republican Sen. Tim Scott an "Oreo" in a social media post.

Gary O’Connor said he “was wrong” following his comment about the South Carolina lawmaker, The Hill reported

“To Sen. Tim Scott, the residents of Lamar County, especially our Black residents, and to my family and friends, I profoundly apologize for the racially insensitive remark I made towards Sen. Scott last week," the Lamar County Democratic Party chairman wrote in a message posted to Facebook.

O’Connor quickly found himself in hot water after saying he "had hoped that Scott might show some common sense, but it seems clear he is little more than an oreo with no real principles."

The term “Oreo” is typically used as a pejorative in the Black community to describe someone who embodies “the social and cultural features of a white person,” according to Wiktionary

Critical of O'Connor's remarks, Allen West, the Texas GOP chair, posted a video to Twitter saying we would mail Democrats a pack of Oreos.

I have a gift — and a message — for #LamarCountyDemocrats Chair Gary O'Connor, and the @texasdemocratspic.twitter.com/9q9d3ntRY7

According to People, O’Connor had originally posted his comment in response to Scott’s latest TV appearance last Wednesday during President Joe Biden’s inaugural address to a joint session of Congress.

After delivering the Republican rebuttal speech, Scott, 55, received mounds of criticism. The controversial speech prompted Clay Cane, a Black radio host and author, to write how the rebuttal was flawed, arguing that Scott and other Republicans often downplay racism “while simultaneously playing the race card” in a piece for CNN.

According to ForbesRep. Pat Fallon, R-Tx., said the remark was “abhorrent, insulting and unforgivable.”

Texas Governor Greg Abbott reacted to the incident in a tweet on May 1 saying O’Connor’s comment was "disgusting, hateful, and completely unacceptable." He is calling on Democrats to censure the remark.

O'Connor has since responded to the criticism and attempted to resign. However, local Democrat officials have refused to accept the resignation “after much discussion,” the Texas Tribune reported.

"Gary O'Connor has led Lamar County Democrats for seven years and his life of service, collaboration, and activism for racial justice is well known throughout this community. His recent remark is incompatible with his core values," their joint statement read.

“Lamar County Democrats recommit ourselves to conduct our private conversations and our public social media discussions with anti-racist, pro-reconciling attitudes and language. We strongly condemn bigotry of any kind and will continue our historic efforts to work for justice and equality for all our fellow citizens,” the statement continued.

In a Twitter response to the attacks made against him, Scott said "hatred and discrimination have no place in our country.”

"Thank you for standing up against the bigotry," Scott wrote.
