British model Elizabeth Hoad has taken the term "puppy love" a bit too seriously.
The 49-year-old swimsuit model decided to give up on the dating game and officially shack up with her golden retriever Logan. She got married to her dog on British daytime television show This Morning on Tuesday.
"I adore him. A year ago today I rescued him … We were meant to meet," she told hosts Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes as they held back laughter.
"He saved me and I've saved him."
Hoad was a very successful model in the 1980s. She was known across the U.K. for her high-profile relationships with famous athletes and entertainers.
But she told the morning hosts that since then, she has had no luck with men. She has a 25-year-old son but has been on more than 200 dates in the last few decades with little success. She said she has had four failed engagements and has tried dating apps like Tinder to no avail.
The final straw was when she managed to meet someone through Facebook last year.
The man, unfortunately, confirmed her worst fears when she realized he was married. Since then, she has dedicated herself to her 6-year-old dog, who she adopted one year ago. She had another dog that died before she adopted Logan and says the two have a profound connection.
“He had a very sad past … For the first four years he was locked up in a utility cupboard, chained up, beaten, starved,” she said. “I was a broken woman when my last dog died.”
She initially got the idea from a few friends who joked that she should just take a leap of faith and settle down with Logan. They did not think she would take their advice literally, Hoad said.
During her interview with the hosts, Hoad admitted that it was difficult to date at her age because older men wanted younger women and younger men were unappealing to her.
The show threw her a lavish, hilarious wedding at the studio and had former Big Brother contestant Alison Hammond comically officiate the ceremony with as many dog puns as humanly possible. "For Better, For Woof" was on the show's chyron throughout the ceremony.
To her credit, Hoad was upfront about her dating struggles.
"I've completely given up … It must be me. Maybe it is me. I don't know," she said.
As Hammond read the couple's vows through uncontrollable laughter, Hoad turned and looked Logan in the eyes.
"He doesn't look very happy," she said.
