Dr. Ben Carson's run as Director of Housing and Urban Development may be coming to an end, according to The New York Magazine.
Over the past few weeks, Carson has been criticized for his inept leadership of one of the most vital federal agencies. Most recently, he was scrutinized for spending $31,000 on a dining-room set for his office, even though he was only authorized to spend $5,000 for furniture upgrades.
The Trump administration has been rocked by several major firings and resignations in the last few days with cabinet members former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and former Security Adviser H.R. McMaster being released. Major news organizations indicate Carson will join them soon.
Politico reports that White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and other top aides are waiting for inspector general reports that will allegedly deliver devastating verdicts on Veteran Affairs Secretary David Shulkin and Carson before pulling the trigger on another round of pink slips. This would be part of a major administrative layoff.
Politico suggests that Carson's spending is a large part of what has Kelly keeping a close eye on him.
Carson testified before a Congressional committee this week about the wasteful spending, and before that, blamed his wife for the purchase.
“I invited my wife to come and help,” Carson said. “I left it to my wife, you know, to choose something. I dismissed myself from the issues.”
According to a recent Blavity report, Carson said that old furniture was a safety hazard and needed to be replaced immediately.
“If it were up to me I would decorate my office like a hospital waiting room,” Carson added that the old furniture was dangerous and needed to be replaced with safer furniture. “People were stuck by nails, and a chair had collapsed with someone sitting in it.”
Carson's furniture debacle has become a full-blown scandal. But Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) believes that it takes away from other issues like Carson's inability to address rampant housing discrimination.
“A lot of people are criticizing you for spending tens of thousands in taxpayer money on fancy furniture,” Warren said in an oversight hearing on Thursday. “And don’t get me wrong, I think scamming the taxpayers is a scandal. But the biggest scandal of your tenure is your unwillingness to do your job and enforce the laws that reduce housing discrimination and segregation across this country.”
