A Los Angeles man was charged with misdemeanor battery for attacking and hurling racial slurs at a black woman during a confrontation over a parking spot on the campus of Santa Monica College reports ABC 7.
Fredric Allan Shinerock, 80, was arrested Tuesday, May 1, after a verbal dispute escalated to physical blows.
A video taken by Santa Monica College student Enrique Conde shows the white man yelling at the woman, calling her a "n****r" repeatedly and then kicking at her. Conde got out of his vehicle and started recording the fracas around him. Onlookers tried to stop the man and get him to leave the scene, but he stayed and continued to shout.
"You don't belong here, go back to South L.A.," he yelled at one point during the altercation.
The woman seen in the video had enough of his racism and dared him to use the racial slur once again. He did, and she retaliated. Shinerock began kicking at the woman. She defended herself from the elderly man's rage.
According to ABC 7, Shinerock was cited and released the same day. The Santa Monica City Attorney's Office has launched an investigation reviewing the case, and the incident has been classified as a hate crime.
There is very little information about what caused the dispute. ABC 7 reports that the woman's car was taking up several spots as seen in the video, but that is unclear.
"Santa Monica College is an institution that prides itself on inclusivity and diversity and we will continue to do our utmost to uphold our commitment to provide a safe and inclusive learning environment," college president Kathryn E. Jeffery said. "We will take immediate and evident action to reinforce to our students, college community and guests that there is no room for hate at Santa Monica College."
