Young Thug caught some heat this weekend when he bashed rap legend André 3000 for no apparent reason during an interview on T.I.'s podcast ExpediTIously.

"I can't rap you two André 3000 songs. I ain't never paid attention to him. Never in my life," the 29-year-old said after T.I. compared his fashion sensibilities to the Outkast member. 

"You crazy. You're missing out. Y'all need to work together," T.I. said before Young Thug shared a story about why he disliked André 3000.

"The difference between Elton John and André is, to simplify it, Elton John likes to kiss a*s, and Dre likes his a*s kissed. Elton John is like, 'Hey! I like you, I remember your first song, I remember Gucci first song, when Guwop getting out?' He a fan type of n***a, to the point where I'm like 'Let's do music,' and he's like 'n***a bet!' André more like, 'this is his secretary' aye, tell the n***a it's Thug, n***a.'"

Astonished, T.I. tried to defend the Atlanta legend, repeatedly saying he was their "ally" despite Young Thug remaining adamant in his thoughts toward the rapper.  

"No. He's who ally? Yeah f**kin right. Why you don't rap like him? You don't talk like him, dress like him, look like him. You ain't trying to portray none of that. I knew a few n***as that everybody tried to portray," Young Thug said in response. 

Most fans of both artists were thrown off by the comments considering how often André 3000, without prompting, has praised Young Thug specifically and other newer artists. 

In a 2017 Complex feature story, he implied that the two were in contact and had connected over fashion and music. 

“I’ve been really inspired by old people there, because there’s a certain comfort in the things they wear. They wear jogging pants. It’s like, I’m so comfortable, I don’t care what you think about what I’m wearing. I was telling [Young Thug] this—you can get style from children and old people, because they don’t give a f**k. I walk through Chinatown every day—early in the morning and midday. I’m told not to go walking there late night,” André 3000 said before speaking at length about how great of an artist Young Thug is.  

“He’s exciting. There’s no box. He’s all over the place. To do those things he does, you have to have big f****n’ balls. It’s almost harder than the guy who’s portraying hard, you know? It’s kind of mind-f***ing people. It’s saying, don’t get too comfortable with me. That’s one of my mottos: Don’t let people get too comfortable with what you’re doing,” he said. 

André 3000 even spoke very pointedly about the pattern of older rappers disliking newer artists and again, praised Young Thug. 

Some fans also pointed to other interviews where he defended newer artists and lauded the new generation of musicians coming up. 

"I hate when people come up to me in public, in the street, and they say, ‘Aw man, don’t you think rap sucks?’ Or, ‘Don’t you think this is not real music?’ I’m thinking in my mind: What do you mean, ‘Real music’? What does that mean? I know what they’re saying, but it’s just unfair to say what’s real and what’s not. Someone’s expression is what it is," André 3000 told TIME in 2014.

"Either you like it or you don’t. Especially being in the South, trap music has gotten a bad rap but I think it’s so inventive and so much of a departure from what we did, and I think you should do that. Every generation after should kill all of their idols, kill all the people before them, don’t mimic them. Keep it moving," he added.


Even New York Congressman-elect Jamaal Bowman got in the comment section. 

Multiple theories for the root of the conflict between the two were floated in the comment section and a few people noted that what Young Thug was complaining about — André 3000 not having a phone — is something he is notorious for. 

As Blavity has previously reported, the iconic rapper has made a point in recent years of living somewhat off the grid, showing up at random places playing instruments. 

Someone else theorized the dispute was over a feature he may have turned down, as the legendary artist has spoken at length about his struggles with continuing to rap. Regardless of Young Thug's issue with André 3000, the consensus was clear: We must put some respect on the legend's name.
