Zendaya remembers Angus Cloud a month after his death. The Euphoria actor’s cause of death was revealed last week. He died from an accidental overdose of fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine and benzodiazepines, according to the Alameda County Coroner’s Office.
“I don’t think a spirit like his could be defined,” Zendaya told People. “He was one of the most unique and pure-hearted people I’ve ever met. I hope he knows how loved he is, how much we miss him and how much better the world is for having felt his glow.”
Cloud was set to reprise his role as Fez in the upcoming season 3 of Euphoria. He starred alongside Zendaya, who played Rue, a young addict. The HBO show was his first major acting job after being noticed by a casting director in the street in New York City.
“He felt like a little brother instantly; ironic because we played characters with the exact opposite dynamic,” Zendaya added. “I’m lucky because I got to experience the most beautiful parts of him. I got to watch him create, and I got to watch him discover the fact that he was an actor. A damn good one at that, and as many times as I would tell him or compliment his performance, I don’t think he ever truly believed it.”
Cloud had been dealing with addiction, which the show’s creator, Sam Levinson, said he confronted him about on various occasions. Levinson told the news outlet that he had suggested rehab and regularly checked in on Cloud while filming season 2.
Cloud’s mother, Lisa, said her son was prescribed opioid pain medication after falling into a construction pit and suffering minor brain damage at 15 years old.
“That’s really what started his drug-seeking behavior,” she said.
“I always knew he was special, and I’m so glad the world also found out he was special,” she added. “My son will always shine bright.”
