Remember when television was all jokes?

These television beefs weren't violent nor did they instill us with fear of harming one another, but they instilled us with generations of laughter.  The hilarious roasting sessions ultimately led to the success of these shows. These frenemies gave us lines to take back to school to look cool in front of our friends and ultimately made us choose a favorite character based on who had the best comebacks.  The beefs weren't violent nor did they instill us with fear of harming one another, but they instead gave us generations of laughter.  The hilarious roasting sessions ultimately led to the success of these shows. These frenemies gave us lines to take back to school to look cool in front of our friends and ultimately made us choose a favorite character based on who had the best comebacks.  In no particular order, here are 10 Black Television Beefs That We Loved:

1.The Martin Lawrence Show: Martin & Pam

Pam was best friends with Martin's wife, Gina.  Pam also dated Martin's friend Tommy (R.I.P. Tommy Ford), which fueled Martin's insults.  Their estranged relationship created the infamous 90's slang term, "beadie bead".

2. Fresh Prince of Bel-Air: Will & Carlton

Will and Carlton were cousins from two very different backgrounds.  Will was the cool cousin from Philly and Carlton was the rich sheltered kid from Bel-Air.  Carlton very rarely made comebacks towards Will's antics, but the two made for great comedy.

3. Living Single: Maxine & Kyle

Maxine and Kyle had the ultimate love-hate relationship (or, situationship).  Insulted each other by day and hooked up with each other at night.

4. Sanford and Son: Fred Sanford and Aunt Esther

Aunt Esther was Fred's sister-in-law.  Esther never cared for Fred but Fred's son Lamont adored his Aunt Esther.  These two were a classic tug of war that we just couldn't get enough of.

5. The Jamie Foxx Show: Jamie and Braxton

Jamie and Braxton's relationship was very similar to Will and Carlton using their opposite backgrounds to lead their beef.

6. Sister, Sister: Tia, Tamera, and Roger

"Go home Roger" became a staple of the 90's based on Roger's admiration for BOTH Tia and Tamera.  Roger constantly struck out but always continued to shoot cupid's arrow for both sisters in hopes of landing one.

7. Family Matters: Steve Urkel and The Winslow's

There wasn't one family member of The Winslow's that Steve Urkel didn't annoy and we lived for every moment of it.  Steve was the neighbor that never knew when to go home and was never officially invited.

8. Good Times: JJ & Bookman

Bookman was the superintendent for the building that the Evans lived in.  JJ often to referred to Bookman as "Buffalo Butt".

9. The Steve Harvey Show: Mr. Hightower and Lovita Alizay Jenkins

Lovita was Steve's best friend's, Cedric, girlfriend.  Steve never flat out insulted Lovita, but gave constant shade to her dingy persona and a side eye that provided plenty of laughs.

10. What's Happening: Shirley and Rerun

Shirley was the waitress at a local restaurant that Rerun and his friends frequented.  Shirley and Rerun were both overweight characters that made fun of each other's sizes.
