A 10-year-old Tennessee girl has inspired thousands for the way she's embracing her natural hair.
In a viral video, fifth-grader Promise Mi'Amor Sawyers vowed to return back to school "bigger and better" after bullies teased her about her afro.
"Good Morning. So yesterday I went to school and I wore my hair in an afro like this. And a lot of people had a lot of mean things to say about it and that made me feel some type of way. So yesterday when I came home, I told my mom and she said, 'Promise, don't forget who you are and whose you are.'…so today I'm going to school and I'm going to come back bigger and better," Sawyers said in the video.
“Don’t allow anyone to steal your joy, don’t give them that much power," she continued.
The girl’s mother, Qui Daugherty, said her daughter recorded the moment on her phone as a reaction to the negative comments. That’s when the Nashville woman shared the video of her daughter on Facebook last month, which has since garnered nearly two million views.
Daugherty told Yahoo Lifestyle that her daughter’s positive mindset comes directly from her environment at home.
“There’s affirmations everywhere…not to mention that I also had kind of wrote her out some affirmations like a year or so ago that I wanted her to say every morning,” Daugherty said.
Sawyers, who is an author and business owner, will be a guest on The Kelly Clarkson Show with her mother to share her story. The pair are set to appear on the show slated to air on Friday afternoon.
In an Instagram post with behind-the-scenes clips of her appearance, Sawyers revealed that she’ll be joined by Tracee Ellis Ross, who launched her new hair-care line, Pattern, earlier this month.
“Thank you Miss [Tracee Ellis Ross] for your kind words and my hair products. My new fairy God-Hair mother,” she wrote.
