The American Film Institute has selected its Top 10 Movies of the Year and Programs of the Year, which will be honored at a luncheon on January 10. 

Unlike other awards which choose winners and losers from a crop of nominees, the AFI Awards instead selects ten projects to honor in both film and television, citing their program as “a moment for the most accomplished storytellers of 2013 to pause and be appreciated – not as competitors, but as a community.”

The film selections are unsurprising, with Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave and Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale Station among a group of critical darlings expected to compete for the Oscar.

Those disappointed in Scandal’s lack of a WGA Award nomination may be excited to see the ABC ratings hit listed among the top TV programs, which typically include a mix of both critical hits and audience favorites. Netflix’s breakout hit Orange is the New Black, which has gained wide acclaim for its diversity as well as its writing, also made the cut.
