It's been 20 years since the iconic signer Aaliyah passed away during a tragic plane crash after leaving the Bahamas for a video shoot. Her death shattered those close to her and the music world, forever.
Family, friends and musical acquaintances gathered for her funeral which was held on Aug. 31 in Manhattan's Upper East Side. While the homegoing was private and closed to the public, fans stood outside in mourning.
Some of those in attendance to say their final goodbyes to the 22-year-old was Missy Elliott, Lil' Kim and Sean Combs.
She was later buried outside of New York City in Greenburgh Westchester County.

Missy Elliott, who worked with Aaliyah on her albums, was seen walking out of the service.
Monica was accompanied by R&B crooner Tank who also sang backup for Aaliyah on her song "Come Over."
The wife of musical genius Quincy Jones and the mother of Kidada and Rashida, Peggy Lipton, was also in attendance.
JAY-Z was among the mourners at the funeral for the artist.
Visibly upset leaving the funeral was Aaliyah's mom, Diane Haughton. Haughton released a single white dove in memory of her daughter upon exiting the church, The New York Times reported.
Twenty-one more birds were released shortly after for the singer's 22 years of life.
Busta Rhymes, who sported his chest-length locs at the time, was in attendance, too.
Lil' Kim was seen arriving at the funeral which was held at St. Ignatius Loyola Roman Catholic Church.
Actor Delroy Lindo, who starred in Romeo Must Die with Aaliyah, was seen arriving at the church.
Sean Combs was also in attendance wearing a stripped suit and shades.
Other artists in attendance were Usher, Timbaland and Gladys Knight, her aunt, whom she performed with in Las Vegas at the age of 11.
In addition to the dozens of celebrities who came to pay their respect were thousands of fans who lined the streets. Her fans remembered the singer was being "positive" and a "good role model."
One fan outside of the funeral held a picture of the singer alongside a yellow rose.
Outside of the church was a floral sign with the words, "Aaliyah one in a million."
As the funeral wrapped, her casket was carried outside of the church and placed in the all-white hearst.
Following her passing, musical artists gathered for the music video of the late artist's song "Miss You." In the video were some of her closest friends in the industry, including DMX who opened the video with a brief monologue.
"Dearest sweet Aaliyah, I have trouble accepting the fact that you're gone. So I won't. It will be like we went a while without seeing each other. But I can understand why God would have wanted you close to Him. Because you were truly an angel on earth," DMX, who passed away in April, said.
While it's been 20 years since her passing, the world has not forgotten about the artist's impact or musical catalog which was just recently added to streaming platforms.
