Almost always an annual source of debate on this blog, with regards to its selections and relevance, earlier today, nominees were announced for the 2013 BET Awards.

This year’s host will be Chris Tucker, for a televised event that will be broadcast on June 30, 2013 at 8pm EST.

In the film categories: Angela BassettHalle Berry, Taraji P. HensonGabrielle Union and Kerry Washington are all nominated in the Best Actress category; and for Best Actor, Don CheadleCommonJamie FoxxSamuel L. Jackson, and Denzel Washington are all nominees.

In the Best Movie category, Beasts of the Southern WildDjango UnchainedSomething from Nothing: The Art of RapSparkle, and Think Like A Man are all nominees.

Leading the pack of nominees in the music categories are Drake, with 12 nominations including Best Male Hip Hop Artist and Video of the YearKendrick Lamar and 2 Chainz tied with nominations; A$AP Rocky with 5 nominations; while Jay-ZJustin Timberlake and Miguel each received nominations in the categories of Best CollaborationCoca-Cola Viewers’ Choice Award and Video of the Year.

This year’s Video of the Year Award nominees include Kanye WestJustin TimberlakeDrakeKendrick LamarRihanna, 2 ChainzA$AP RockyMiguelMacklemore and Ryan Lewis.

Expect performances from Chris Brown, R. Kelly and others.

Meanwhile, Charlie Wilson will receive the Cadillac Lifetime Achievement Award, in honor of his four decades in the entertainment industry.

This year’s line-up of nominees and performers is reflective of the variety of fantastic talent that’s rocking the world right now,” says Stephen G. Hill, President of Music Programming and Specials. “We are especially excited as we move on up to the Nokia Theatre at LA Live. You know how we do. Big thangs shall indeed be poppin’. The BET Awards. Anything Can Happen…and most likely will.

For the first time this year, the general public can purchase tickets to the BET Awards with a BET Experience VIP Package, which also includes 3-day tickets to nightly concerts at the Staples Center.
