The 2014 Tony Award nominations were announced this morning in New York.
Congrats are in order for: the cast and crew of After Midnight (Best Musical); A Raisin in the Sun (Best Revival of a Play); LaTanya Richardson Jackson (A Raisin in the Sun) and Audra McDonald (Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill), both nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play; Sophie Okonedo (A Raisin in the Sun) and Anika Noni Rose (A Raisin in the Sun), both nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play; Adriane Lenox (After Midnight) for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical; and Kenny Leon (A Raisin in the Sun) for Best Direction of a Play.
An obvious miss here would be Denzel Washington not receiving a nomination for his leading performance in A Raisin in the Sun, which stands out even more when you consider that the rest of the play’s key cast (Richardson, Rose, Okonedo) as well as its director (Leon) were all nominated in their respective categories.
A Denzel snub, or was the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play category very competitive this year? I’ll leave that debate to the theatre pros who’ve seen every single one of the nominated shows.
The last time Denzel starred in a Broadway play was in the 2010 revival of August Wilson’s Fences (also directed by Kenny Leon, by the way) – a performance for which he won the Tony Award for Actor in a Leading Role in a Play.
This year’s nomination will be Audra McDonald’s 8th. She’s won 5 Tonys, sharing the record for most Tonys won by an actor with Julie Harris and Angela Lansbury. Might this year put her firmly in the top spot, as the actor with the most Tony award wins?
Tune in Sunday, June 8, at 8/7c, on CBS, when the 2014 Tony Awards celebration will be held and broadcast live.
Here is the full list of nominations for the 68th annual Tony Awards.
