The Oscar nominees for 2020 were announced Monday morning and the diversity….is almost non-existent.
There are only five nominees for Black talent and projects. Cynthia Erivo became the 12th Black actress to get nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Erivo is the one person of color out of 20 acting nominees. She and Joshuah Brian Campbell are also nominated for Best Original Song for “Stand Up” from the film.
Matthew A. Cherry’s animated short film, Hair Love, is nominated in the Best Animated Short category. Ladj Ly is nominated for Best International Feature Film for Les Miserables.
St. Louis Superman, from directors Smriti Mundhra and Sami Khan, is nominated for Best Documentary Short Subject. The film focuses on activist and former Missouri legislator Bruce Franks Jr.
And as expected, there are no women nominated for Best Director, and Issa Rae took the time during this morning’s live announcements to throw shade!
