A 54-year-old man from Arlington County, Virginia, is dead after attempting to save a woman from a sexual assault.

The suspect,  27-year-old Michael Nash, was walking alongside a woman that police said he knew in the area of Columbia Pike and George Mason Drive when he began sexually assaulting her near a secluded area Thursday night.

The Washington Post reports screams rang out, catching the attention of Patricio Salazar. The man got out of his vehicle and ran to the woman's calls for help to ward off the attack.

Nash fought off Salazar, leaving him bloodied and injured on a sidewalk near some food trucks, according to WUSA 9 News. “I just heard screaming. Wasn’t saying anything, she was just screaming as loud as she could," said Brad Flood, 27, who also ran out of his home to investigate.

Flood found the two victims — the woman petrified in tattered clothes and the man in need of serious medical attention.

"I saw a girl, unclothed, sitting there curled up in a ball. And she was the one screaming," said Flood.

“I said, 'What is going on,' and that’s when he appeared right there. He was like, 'Don’t call the cops. You call the cops; I will end your world.' He came enough into the light that I could see a bunch of blood on his fists. I was like, alright. I was trying to get him away from her and draw him out into the street because I could see cars coming."

Flood tried to flagged down cars to get some assistance, and that is when he noticed Salazar. While medical responders were en route, he tried to comfort the two. Salazar was unconscious from head injuries and died from other sustained injuries at George Washington University Hospital.

After assaulting the two, Nash ran and tried to rob two other people in the area. He ended up in a scuffle with them and stole a cellphone from one of the victims.

NBC Washington reports Nash was apprehended later that evening and arrested on charges including intent to defile, forcible sodomy and animate object sexual penetration. It is still likely the suspect will face more charges.

The family of Patricio Salazar has set up a GoFundMe to pay for funeral costs and help the victim of the sexual assault.
