A high school junior walking her dog in Irvington, New Jersey, is being praised for her heroic efforts in potentially saving a kidnapping victim who was locked in the trunk of a car.

According to ABC News affiliate WBAC, 17-year-old Kayla Rose said she heard faint noises coming from the inside of a Nissan Altima Thursday morning. The young girl also told the news site about her brief interaction with the victim.

"I heard knocking and scratching on the trunk of the car, and I just backed up because I was scared," Rose said. "And then I heard it again. And then I said, 'Hello.' And he was like, 'Hello, can anybody help me?'"

Rose and her mother then phoned police while another bystander attempted to pry open the trunk with a crowbar, per HuffPost. Eventually, the man was rescued from the car and taken to a local hospital for minor injuries.

Thankfully, officials were able to identify the suspect who captured the man. JaVohn Berrouet was detained Friday morning on charges of first-degree carjacking, first-degree kidnapping, first-degree robbery and several other accusations. Per a news release from the Office of the Union County Prosecutor, the initial attack occurred Wednesday evening, where the 24-year-old suspect and an accomplice demanded the unidentified victim to take out large amounts of cash from a local bank. Berrouet is facing anywhere from 10-30 years behind bars if convicted.
